CYCLING IN THE NETHERLANDS
Exploring the Netherlands by bike means immersing yourself in a country where cycling is far more than a means of transport – it is a true way of life. With its flat and welcoming landscape, the country boasts over 32,000 kilometres of exceptionally well-designed and well-maintained cycle paths, clearly signposted to make navigation easy and intuitive.
As you pedal along the peaceful canals, you will encounter the country’s architectural history, with elegant 17th-century townhouses lining the waterways. The flat lands reclaimed from the sea – the famous polders – tell the story of Dutch mastery of water management, a testament to the ingenuity of the Dutch people. The iconic windmills, built to drain low-lying areas, remain powerful symbols of this technical achievement that has shaped the landscape.
Local culture reveals itself in the smallest details: markets offering traditional cheeses, cafés serving the famous apple pie generously topped with whipped cream, and even a few locals still wearing wooden clogs, a craft that is still practised in certain regions.
YOUR ITINERARY
This circular route starting from Amersfoort takes you to discover the country’s iconic highlights: vibrant Amsterdam with its UNESCO-listed canals, modern Rotterdam and its futuristic architecture, as well as lesser-known gems such as Haarlem and its hidden courtyards, Leiden with its renowned university, and Delft and Utrecht, among the oldest cities in the Netherlands. You will cycle through varied landscapes offering views of colourful tulip fields in spring (including the famous Keukenhof), picturesque villages, wild coastal dunes near Scheveningen, and of course Kinderdijk, perhaps the most photogenic site in the Netherlands, with its magnificent windmills surrounded by canals.
Whether riding along historic canals, through meadows shared by dairy cows (and cheese-makers!) and flocks of sheep, or across wild dunes along the coast, every pedal stroke brings you closer to a deeper understanding of this fascinating country and its welcoming people.
Goeie reis!
DAY-BY-DAY PROGRAMME
Day 1: Arrival in Amersfoort
Amersfoort is a charming town where the past is still very much alive thanks to its many historic buildings. Take a stroll through the narrow streets of the medieval centre and admire its impressive city walls.
Day 2: Amersfoort – Amsterdam
65 km |
+60 m | ⏱︎ 3h48
Before reaching bustling Amsterdam, you will discover Naarden-Vesting, one of the best-preserved star-shaped fortresses in Europe, whose perfectly intact ramparts testify to Dutch military ingenuity. The route briefly follows the Markermeer, a lake that was once part of the Zuiderzee before being reclaimed by the Dutch in the 20th century.
You then arrive in Amsterdam, a lively capital where boredom has no place. Be charmed by its concentric canals, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which give the city its elegant layout and its nickname as the “Venice of the North”, a title it shares with Bruges. Amsterdam also boasts exceptional cultural wealth, with world-famous museums such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum – home to the largest collection of the artist’s work – and the moving Anne Frank House, a poignant reminder of the Second World War.
Day 3: Amsterdam – Noordwijk
60 km |
+110 m | ⏱︎ 3h41
You first reach Haarlem, an elegant town known for its hofjes – peaceful inner courtyards surrounded by small houses that once served as almshouses for widows and the elderly, funded by wealthy merchants in the 18th and 19th centuries. Art lovers should not miss the Frans Hals Museum, housed in a former almshouse and featuring an outstanding collection by the master portrait painter of the Dutch Golden Age.
After Haarlem, head towards the famous Keukenhof, a spectacular botanical garden renowned worldwide. During the tulip season (from April to early May), a visit is simply unmissable, as millions of bulbs burst into a dazzling kaleidoscope of colours. You then follow the North Sea coast on a scenic ride through wild dunes, between fine sand and maritime vegetation.
💡 If the hotel in Noordwijk is unavailable, you will stay in Zandvoort (on the coast, 10 km earlier).
Day 4: Noordwijk – Delft
51 km |
+50 m | ⏱︎ 3h08
You continue to feast your eyes today! First, you pass through Leiden, a prestigious university city founded in 1575, which counted illustrious figures such as Rembrandt and René Descartes among its students. Its rich heritage unfolds along canals lined with patrician houses, while culture lovers can explore the National Museum of Ethnology or admire the majestic Pieterskerk (St Peter’s Church).
After Leiden, enjoy a seaside break in Scheveningen, the lively seaside resort of The Hague, with its long sandy beach and famous pier. You then reach The Hague (Den Haag), seat of the Dutch government. Far more than an administrative capital, the city charms visitors with its royal elegance: admire the Catshuis (the Prime Minister’s residence), Noordeinde Palace, the King’s working palace, or the Mauritshuis, home to masterpieces by Vermeer and Rembrandt, including the famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. Wander through the historic city centre and its tranquil canals.
You then arrive in Delft, another historic university town and one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. Its well-preserved historic centre reflects its prosperous mercantile past, with many impressive buildings.
💡 In July and August, for logistical reasons, the overnight stay is usually in The Hague (around 10 km earlier) rather than Delft.
Day 5: Delft – Papendrecht
46 km |
+40 m | ⏱︎ 2h46
You first reach Rotterdam, a city with a unique destiny. Completely rebuilt after the devastating bombings of the Second World War, it reinvented itself as a bold architectural laboratory, with landmarks such as the Cube Houses and the Markthal adorned with giant murals.
You then cycle along Kinderdijk, a site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and probably the most iconic location in the Netherlands. Its 19 windmills aligned along picturesque canals form a breathtaking scene, a perfect symbol of the centuries-old Dutch struggle against water.
Day 6: Papendrecht – Utrecht
62 km |
+50 m | ⏱︎ 3h35
Your journey through Holland continues via Schoonhoven, a romantic little town on the banks of the Lek River. In the surrounding countryside, farmers raise dairy cows to produce the famous Gouda cheese.
You then cycle through pastoral landscapes towards Utrecht, the fourth-largest city in the Netherlands. Its historic centre is renowned for its unique two-level canals, lined with vaulted cellars converted into cafés and terraces, and for St Martin’s Cathedral, whose tower dominates the city skyline.
Day 7: Utrecht – Amersfoort
46 km |
+80 m | ⏱︎ 2h50
The final stage before completing the loop! This is the perfect moment to capture the typical panoramas of this region known as the “Green Heart of Holland”, with its vast pastures dotted with grazing cows. As the stage is relatively short, you will have plenty of time to further explore Utrecht and Amersfoort and their charming medieval centres.
Day 8: End of the trip
End of your Dutch odyssey after breakfast.

🎒 EQUIPMENT TO BRING
If you have hired a bike, the pannier, lock and repair kit are already included (if you are bringing your own bike, don’t forget them!).
For added comfort, we also recommend bringing the following accessories:
Waterproof overtrousers
Lightweight, waterproof, windproof and easy to put on, they protect against rain, splashes and mud. Some models include gaiters that also cover your shoes.
External battery (power bank)
Useful for recharging your phone during lunch breaks: navigation consumes a lot of power, even in flight mode.
Recommended unless your battery performance is excellent.
Expect to pay around €10–€20.
Padded cycling shorts or gel saddle cover
Padded shorts improve comfort by absorbing shocks and reducing friction on longer rides. Alternatively, opt for a padded saddle cover.
Water bottle
More practical and sustainable than disposable bottles. Some models keep drinks cool for several hours thanks to double-wall insulation.
Buff / neck warmer / beanie
Outside the summer months, mornings can be cool, and you won’t regret having these with you!
Smartphone holder
This small accessory allows you to view the route continuously on your phone and is especially useful when there are many junctions.
Helmet
The rental company does not provide helmets. Although helmet use is less common in the Netherlands, we recommend bringing your own.
