FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our bike travel agency, with a solid experience in the organisation of bike tours, will allow you to have the bike trip you have always dreamed of. From hotel reservations with breakfast to the design of a tailor-made roadbook, from the transport of your luggage from one accommodation to another to the rental of bicycles on the spot, Cyclodyssées takes care of everything!

In our roadbook, you will find, in addition to all the practical information concerning the places to eat, to buy food or to visit on the way, many information and anecdotes about the region ! You will also have the possibility to have a GPS guidance thanks to our .gpx files which open with many navigation applications, as well as a topographic map which will give you a global view. Finally, so that you can ride with an even lighter mind, we provide telephone assistance in case of mechanical problems along the way, and can take care of finding you a local mechanic if necessary!

The price always includes carefully selected accommodation with breakfast, on-site logistics, roadbook and GPS files. A number of other services are included, depending on the tour. Click on the tour you are interested in. Then, in the “Prices” tab, you will find all the information you need.

Easy :

Ideal for families with children or travellers for whom cycling is something they are not used to. The route is generally flat, with only a few gentle climbs where there are any.  The daily distances are generally between 30 and 45 km (2 to 3 hours of cycling), and do not exceed 50 kilometres.

Average :

Ideal for those who want to discover a region without having to make great efforts. You don’t need to be a regular cyclist, but you’ve already cycled for several hours without getting out of breath. The route can be somewhat hilly on some of the routes, but the gradients are not too steep. The stages are generally between 40 and 60 km long, sometimes slightly longer when there is little or no relief.

Rather sporty:

If the length of the stages does not differ from the “average” level, the relief is often a little more uneven, and the stages can reach more than 800 m of positive difference in altitude. If you are not a regular cyclist, however, the route is still affordable on an electric bike.

Sporty:

For those who opt for a classic bike, the route will be demanding as the environment is mountainous, with climbs that can be long and steep. On some days, the positive difference in altitude can amount to more than 1200 m. However, discovery always takes precedence over sport, and the length of the stages is generally between 40 and 60 km/day. If you opt for an electric bike, the route is still quite accessible, provided you are a regular cyclist.

An itinerary is not easy to make!

DESTINATION

In order to be well planned, an itinerary must first of all take you through beautiful landscapes, because it is ultimately these that will accompany you throughout your journey. To avoid becoming monotonous after a few days, the landscapes must also be varied.

But what would be the value of magnificent landscapes without discovering its inhabitants, its villages and its traditions?

So, first of all, we need to find a region that can offer us a good mix of landscape quality, interesting cultural discoveries and diversity of the places we visit!

All this without losing sight of the fact that this region should not be too complicated to access – whether you go there by train, car or plane – and ideally already have a certain reputation (such as Bavaria, the Périgord, Tuscany, etc.)

ACCOMMODATION AND LOGISTICS

Once the region has been chosen, it is time to find suitable accommodation. In the city, finding hotels with a room or garage to store your bikes is not always easy. In the countryside, the problem is more often related to the lack of adequate accommodation facilities: in some villages, when there is not simply nothing, there are sometimes just a few gîtes that only rent for several days, or small guest houses that you can never be too sure of being able to count on because they only have a few rooms.  In high season, even some hotels sometimes require a reservation for at least two nights, unless they have “gaps” to fill! So that’s the first headache!

You also need to find a service provider who can transport your luggage: sometimes the accommodation will do this, but more often it will be specialised companies or taxis.

And of course, find a bike rental company with quality, fully equipped bikes!

ITINERARY

Then comes the time to design the route itself: find nice quiet roads that do not lead to major roads, avoid steep slopes, keep the difference in altitude as small as possible without skimping on the quality of the route, make sure that the gravel roads – which are sometimes excellent side roads – are passable with “classic” bikes, find out about hunting or raptor nesting periods (during which some roads might be temporarily closed), etc.

All this while trying to make stages between 40 and 60 kilometres, so that it is neither too short nor too long, thus leaving time to make many stops along the way.

Once the itinerary has been validated, we often also think of sporting variants (which we also test!) so that cycling aficionados always have something to enjoy!

ROADBOOK

Then it’s time to write an exciting roadbook! In addition to technical details about the route, our roadbooks are full of cultural information about the places youwill be riding through, recommendations for visits, suggestions for detours, information about places to eat and drink, and interesting anecdotes!
