PORTO, PENEDA-GERÊS AND THE DOURO VALLEY

Northern Portugal… A region that immediately brings to mind the legendary Douro Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage site, made internationally famous by its endless terraced vineyards. Not to mention the wines produced here, whose reputation speaks for itself!

To the north of this true backbone lies the Minho region, stretching all the way to the Spanish border. Still largely undiscovered by tourists, it is nevertheless considered the most beautiful region in the country by the Portuguese.

Once you leave the urban areas, curious travellers are rewarded with rolling green hills, far removed from the more Mediterranean clichés traditionally associated with Portugal. As you head east, the landscape becomes increasingly wild, rocky and mountainous, until you reach the Peneda-Gerês park, the country’s only national park. Despite their ruggedness, the landscapes seem straight out of a fairy tale. That was more than enough for us to decide this would be the starting point of this two-wheeled Portuguese odyssey.

YOUR ITINERARY

This cycling holiday takes you through two of the country’s most enchanting regions, gradually leading you from the austere mountains of Minho to the gentle Upper Douro Valley. A highly varied route awaits. After two days exploring the dramatic landscapes of the Peneda-Gerês park, you head into the green countryside of the Minho before entering the remote region of Trás-os-Montes, literally meaning “behind the hills”. This region is home to the Alvão Natural Park, a striking and mysterious mountain range that you will cross by bike from end to end. Gradually, you return to “civilisation” until reaching Vila Real, the royal city, renowned for its majestic Mateus Palace.

Then comes a magical moment: just when you begin to doubt it, you catch sight of the Douro Valley in the distance. Nestled at the bottom of a deep gorge, the river does not reveal itself easily, but the many vineyards on the surrounding slopes and the increasingly cheerful landscapes leave no doubt that it is close. After two days of wonder in the Douro Valley, you return to Porto, which well deserves one or two days of exploration itself!

To fully enjoy this touring holiday, we recommend using an electric bike. On some days, the elevation gain exceeds 1,000 metres. A standard bike is of course also an option, but it requires good fitness and training.

Boa viagem!

DAY-BY-DAY PROGRAMME

Day 1: Arrival in Porto

Although Porto may not boast a globally iconic monument, it is far from lacking in charm. Overshadowed by Lisbon throughout the 20th century, its status as a secondary city has likely spared its historic quarter from questionable large-scale urban developments. The result is a city that has retained much of its former character, still echoing the splendour of the centuries when New World gold allowed Porto to flourish.
Its maze of narrow stepped streets, weathered façades—some adorned with azulejos—its picturesque yellow trams from the 1920s, and the warmth of its inhabitants all give it a distinctly retro, slightly bohemian feel that is sure to win you over. Porto would not be what it is without the Douro flowing at its feet, which once carried countless rabelos loaded with barrels of fine port bound for thirsty lands.

Day 2: Porto // Mixões da Serra – Gerês

Distance 29 km | Elevation gain +500 m | ⏱︎ 1h58

Private transfer to Mixões da Serra, located at 730 m altitude, the starting point of this great adventure.

You then ride along beautiful, exposed minor roads across the Serra Amarela (“yellow mountain”) before entering the famous Peneda-Gerês National Park. On these wind-swept ridges, vegetation is sparse, with only ferns and heather thriving. The views are therefore often wide open, sometimes stretching far into the distance.

Along the way, you pass through peaceful villages untouched by modern life, where typical granite houses with thick walls reflect a once austere lifestyle. Around a bend, you may also come across one or two impressive espigueiros on stilts, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Entirely made of granite, they resemble extravagant tombs but were simply used to dry maize safely away from rodents. After a lovely descent, you reach Gerês, a small spa town nestled in a narrow valley, where you spend the night.

Day 3: Gerês – Guilhofrei

Distance 45 km | Elevation gain +1100 m | ⏱︎ 3h35

The first part of the day unfolds beneath a beautiful forest of eucalyptus, oak, pine and chestnut trees. Magnificent viewpoints and charming waterfalls punctuate the route. The most famous, humorously nicknamed Tahiti waterfall by locals, offers a refreshing swim.

You then leave the national park and continue through more desolate landscapes, where you might encounter widows dressed in black or farmers leading their long-horned cattle to better pastures. The many small stone walls lining the landscape may even remind you of Ireland.

🚲 Sporty option (55 km | Elevation gain: 1,560 m | ⏱︎: 4h47)

Those choosing this option will pass via the Pedra Bela viewpoint and the Rocas viewpoint, both offering superb views, though the climb is long and steep! A small detour also leads to the Arado waterfalls.

Day 4: Guilhofrei – Mondim de Basto

Distance 46 km | Elevation gain +1030 m | ⏱︎ 3h34

A pleasant country road first leads you to Aboim, home to a still-standing traditional windmill. You then follow a superb panoramic route with views you will never tire of. Further on stands the Casa do Penedo, a remarkable stone house wedged between two enormous granite boulders. You descend into the plains, crossing picturesque countryside before joining a greenway that leads to your destination: Mondim de Basto.

☕ Relaxed option (39 km | Elevation gain: 870 m | ⏱︎: 3h01):

For a gentler day, you can take a shortcut that does not skip any major points of interest.

Day 5: Mondim de Basto – Vila Real

Distance 43 km | Elevation gain +1240 m | ⏱︎ 3h36

The day begins with a challenging climb up to the heights of the Alvão Natural Park, made up of high pastures grazed by sheep and cattle, granite villages, rugged rocky landscapes, and pine forests on sheltered slopes. The spectacular scenery more than rewards the effort. The highlight is the viewpoint over the Fisgas do Ermelo waterfalls, which plunge more than 200 metres and are considered among the most beautiful in Europe!

This mountain range also forms a natural barrier between the humid Atlantic climate and the drier, more continental interior. A completely different world awaits once you descend the other side (and what a descent!). You then reach the royal city of Vila Real, whose charming historic centre has stood the test of time.

Day 6: Vila Real – Peso da Régua

Distance 53 km | Elevation gain +680 m | ⏱︎ 3h15

Your day begins with a visit to the magnificent and unmissable Mateus Palace, a striking example of Baroque architecture (the very palace featured on the label of the famous Mateus wine!). A guided tour is recommended.

A few kilometres further, a short detour leads to the Panóias rock sanctuary, where the Romans carved mysterious cavities into granite blocks for the worship of Serapis, an… Egyptian deity! You then ride through pine forests before, as you approach the Upper Douro gorge, terraced vineyards begin to shape the landscape—heralding the moment when you finally glimpse the famous river. Before descending, a stop at the São Leonardo viewpoint is essential: quite simply the finest view over the gorge, according to the Portuguese! A memorable descent follows, gradually bringing you to the riverbanks, which you follow to reach the town of Peso da Régua, a true hub of the port wine trade. Here you can visit the Douro Museum, which offers insight into the region and its history.

Day 7: Free day or loop to Lamego

Distance 43 km | Elevation gain +980 m | ⏱︎ 3h18

Several options are available today!

  • Wine lovers can visit a nearby quinta (which we can book in advance), to learn more about the production of renowned port wines—followed, of course, by a tasting.
  • Alternatively, you can ride a 42 km loop to the charming town of Lamego and its famous Our Lady of Remedies Sanctuary—though be prepared for a bit of climbing!
  • Looking for something different? Opt for a 2-hour cruise on the Douro to Pinhão, then return by train—equally scenic.

💡 If you start early, you can combine two of these activities without rushing.

Day 8: Transfer to Porto and end of the trip

The private transfer to Porto takes place in the morning.

You will arrive in Porto around midday. On request, we can drop you off along the metro line that goes directly to the airport.

💡OPTIONAL EXTRA NIGHTS

  • On request, it is possible to stay an additional night in Peso da Régua, but you will need to return to Porto by train on your own (without your hire bikes, which we will collect).
  • You can also opt for 1 or 2 extra nights in Porto. Not only does it deserve at least a full day, but it is also an excellent base for excursions to the historic cities of Braga and Guimarães, both around one hour away by train.

BIKE CHOICE

Whether you choose a rental bike or bring your own, it is essential to have a bike suited both to the route and to your personal needs.

RENTAL BIKES

We offer good-quality trekking bikes and/or electric bikes, equipped with all essential accessories. In summer, due to potential heatwaves, physical effort can become demanding, and we therefore strongly advise against choosing a non-electric bike during this season.
This trip is also not recommended for children under 14, given the elevation gain.

Trekking bikes

CUBE NATURE XC models, equipped with 30 gears, an aluminium frame and disc brakes. These bikes are both robust and lightweight, ideal for tackling climbs with reduced effort.

Trekking bike example

Electric bikes (e-bikes)

CUBE Touring Hybrid One models, equipped with a BOSCH motor and a 625 Wh battery. You can expect a range of at least 70 kilometres with great comfort.

Accessories included:

  • Phone holder (1 per bike)
  • Waterproof rear pannier (1 per bike)

IF YOU BRING YOUR OWN BIKE

Before departure, carefully check the condition of your bike: brakes, tyres, cassette, derailleur, chain...
You may be far from assistance in case of mechanical issues!

Suitable bikes:

  • Trekking bike
  • Mountain bike
  • Gravel bike
  • E-bike with good range
  • Road bike
  • City bike

💡 As the route includes some compact gravel sections, avoid tyres that are too thin or too slick. Mountain bike tyres are not necessary, however.

LEVEL: SPORTY (HILLY REGION)

➡️ Stages are moderately long (around 3 to 4 hours of cycling per day – max. 5).
This pace suits most people, allowing a balance between enjoyment and exploration along the way.

➡️ Northern Portugal is quite hilly, even mountainous in places, but the effort is always rewarded by the spectacular scenery from the heights. This tour requires good endurance if you do not opt for an electric bike.

➡️ Some days include a sporty or relaxed option, which you can decide on the day. These options do not miss any key highlights.

⚡ An electric bike is strongly recommended on this route to fully enjoy the trip, as some stages include over 1,000 m of elevation gain. In summer, heat can also make the effort quite demanding.

DAILY DISTANCES:

📊 Average distance: 43 km/day
🔝 Maximum distance: 53 km/day

ELEVATION GAIN:

📊 Average elevation gain: +922 m/day
🔝 Maximum elevation gain: +1240 m/day

TYPE OF ROUTE:

You will mostly ride on quiet country roads with little or no traffic. More than 90% of the route is paved. The remainder follows well-maintained compact gravel tracks. No technical difficulty to report.

💡 Our trips prioritise discovery and enjoyment over physical effort. We carefully adjust stage lengths according to terrain, road types and points of interest, ensuring each day remains balanced, enjoyable and open to spontaneity.
We also take great care to avoid busy roads as much as possible, providing a peaceful and safe itinerary.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

⏱️ DURATION

8 days and 7 nights, including arrival and departure days. 6 days of cycling.

📅 AVAILABLE DEPARTURE DAYS

Every Saturday from April to October. The first cycling day (Day 2) therefore takes place on Sunday.

On the following Saturday (Day 8), you will arrive in Porto around midday. If you are flying home the same day, we recommend choosing a flight after 3 pm, or adding an extra night in Porto.

🗺️ ROUTE TYPE

Linear.

📍 START AND END POINT

Start of the trip: Porto
End of the trip: Porto

🌦️ WHEN TO GO?

Weather is generally favourable from April to October.

In summer, cycling can be challenging during the hottest hours: at this time of year, we only recommend this trip with an electric bike (less effort required, and the speed provides a refreshing breeze). Thanks to altitude and latitude, summer heat is less extreme than in the south of the country, although heatwaves remain possible. A summer departure is therefore still feasible for those comfortable with warm temperatures.

In the shoulder seasons, temperatures are usually very pleasant, though with a slightly higher chance of rain. In spring, landscapes are particularly lush. September coincides with the grape harvest in the Douro.
💡 Note: weather conditions can vary significantly from year to year. The above information reflects averages only.

🍽️ MEALS

Breakfasts are included.
Lunches and dinners are not included (except for 1 dinner which is included).

During the day, you can eat in local restaurants (you will find recommendations in your roadbook) or prepare a picnic using supplies from local shops.

For dinner, you will always find several restaurants within walking distance of your accommodation… unless your hotel already has one!

💡 If you are travelling as a group, we can arrange half-board.

🧳 LUGGAGE TRANSFER

Your luggage is transported from one accommodation to the next by one of our partners. You only carry your essentials for the day while cycling. A pannier is provided with the rental bike.

💡 1 piece of luggage (max. 20 kg) per traveller

If you prefer to carry your luggage in panniers, you benefit from a discount.

🚩 GETTING THERE

BY TRAIN

Since the overnight sleeper train “Sud Expresso” between Hendaye (on the Spanish border) and Portugal was discontinued—despite plans to reinstate it after Covid—travelling to Portugal by train is no longer straightforward. The easiest option is now to take a coach (such as FlixBus) from Bayonne, as the train journey would take more than a day.
Reaching Bayonne is relatively straightforward from the Mediterranean coast, and from Paris there is now once again a sleeper train.

BY CAR

Our roadbook will provide information on paid and free parking options (the latter located on the outskirts of Porto) where you can leave your car during your trip.

BY AIR

Direct flights to Porto are available from many major European cities.

💡 To travel between Porto city centre and the airport, there is a direct metro line (departures every 30 minutes during the day).

📑 TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

To help you make the most of your adventure, we provide several practical and user-friendly materials:

  • A printed roadbook (A5 booklet) prepared by us, including:

🎒 WHAT TO BRING

A helmet, lock, repair kit, phone holder and waterproof rear pannier form the basic equipment. If you have rented a bike, these are included (helmet on request only).
For greater comfort, we also recommend bringing the following specific accessories:

Waterproof overtrousers

Lightweight, waterproof, windproof and easy to put on, they protect against rain, splashes and mud. Some models include gaiters that also cover your shoes.

waterproof overtrousers

Power bank (external battery)

Useful for recharging your phone during lunch breaks: navigation uses a lot of power, even in airplane mode. Recommended unless your battery is very efficient.
Approx. €10–20.

power bank

Padded cycling shorts or gel saddle cover

Padded shorts improve comfort by absorbing shocks and reducing friction during longer rides. Alternatively, opt for a padded saddle cover.

Water bottle

More practical and sustainable than disposable bottles. Some models keep drinks cool for several hours thanks to insulated double walls.

REVIEWS

Yves and Sylvie, 74 and 68 years old

"From Minho to the Douro Valley. We returned delighted from our cycling trip in Portugal. The first day was a bit damp, but we managed to dodge the rain and fully enjoy the scenery with its large rounded rocks scattered here and there. The feeling of being both at the centre of everything and in the middle of nowhere. The rest of the week was great. 90% of the route is on very small roads with at most two or three cars. Varied landscapes, flowers everywhere, countless blooming broom bushes, other yellow, white and purple flowers… It’s a journey of colours and scents. Extraordinary viewpoints. We will always remember the superb descent from the São Leonardo viewpoint down to the Douro riverbanks through the vineyards. And what about the sound of church bells! This mountainous region is magnificent! In short, we completely switched off for a week. Thank you Joseph and Cyclodyssées!"  September 2025

Yvan and Geneviève, 69 and 69 years old

"A magnificent tour in Portugal, extremely well organised. The routes chosen by Cyclodyssées are perfect for cyclists: quiet roads and tracks. The electric bikes are of excellent quality, but don’t use the 'turbo' mode too often, or you may finish the stage relying only on your own legs... We are already looking forward to booking another trip for our holiday plans."  September 2023

Bénédicte and Alexandre, 64 and 59 years old

"Several trips with Cyclodyssees. Always very satisfied."  August 2023
