THE VÉLODYSSÉE AND THE CHARENTE ISLANDS BY BIKE
The Charente coastline reveals its finest scenery along La Vélodyssée, this legendary cycle route that follows the Atlantic seaboard. This generous region is centred around three island gems: Île de Ré, renowned for its whitewashed villages and salt marshes; Île d’Aix, a small, unspoilt car-free paradise; and Île d’Oléron, the largest of them all, combining oyster farming, pine forests and wild coastline. Each island offers a variety of landscapes and atmospheres that keep the sense of wonder alive day after day.
On the mainland, between La Rochelle and Marennes, you cycle to the rhythm of the ocean, passing through salty sea-scented landscapes where sandy beaches, shimmering salt marshes and lively oyster ports follow one another. Rochefort stands proud as a historic naval town with an exceptional maritime heritage, while Marennes immerses you in the world of oysters and traditional “claires”.
The seaside resorts of Charente punctuate your journey with their summer atmosphere, creating a delightful contrast with the tranquillity of the island’s natural spaces. Each evening, local restaurants invite you to savour the region’s gastronomic treasures: freshly caught seafood platters, new potatoes from Ré with their distinctive nutty flavour, Charente grissons and perfectly sweet melons.
A CIRCULAR ROUTE BETWEEN LAND AND SEA
This 5-day cycling loop begins with a complete immersion in the unique atmosphere of Île de Ré, accessible from La Rochelle. You then return to the mainland by ferry before heading south the following morning. You follow the coastline to Rochefort, where you stay overnight before exploring Île d’Aix the next day — another motor-free island escape where absolute serenity reigns.
Your journey then continues towards Marennes, gateway to the oyster basin, before crossing to Île d’Oléron to reach Boyardville. From there, the ferry gently takes you back to La Rochelle. The sea breeze, the soft evening light and, in the distance, the iconic silhouette of Fort Boyard rising from the waves provide an unforgettable finale to this adventure.
Designed for families, this tour combines discovery, relaxation and gastronomy, all bathed in the salty air of the Atlantic.
Have a wonderful trip!
DAY-BY-DAY PROGRAMME
Day 1: Arrival in La Rochelle
Arriving by train or car, you reach La Rochelle, the pearl of the Atlantic. Upon arrival at your hotel, you will receive your travel documents.
A port city with a prestigious past, La Rochelle captivates visitors with its vibrant atmosphere and exceptional heritage. Its Old Port, dominated by the imposing Towers of Saint-Nicolas and de la Chaîne, long served as the strategic guardian of the harbour entrance. From the 13th century onwards, these towers protected the city from invasion and controlled the thriving trade in salt and wine, once exported throughout Europe.
Today, La Rochelle is a lively and welcoming city. Enjoy its bustling markets, seafront terraces and environmental commitment: it was one of the first French cities to introduce a public bike-sharing system as early as the 1970s!
Day 2: Escape to Île de Ré
21 km |
+90 m
A day discovering Île de Ré, a preserved island of varied landscapes known for its salt marshes, traditional villages and maritime heritage. After crossing the famous Île de Ré bridge, you cycle through Rivedoux-Plage, then the village of La Flotte-en-Ré, whose harbour and narrow streets reflect a rich past, before reaching Saint-Martin-de-Ré, a former fortified stronghold built to protect the island.
Return to La Rochelle by boat in the late afternoon, enjoying a maritime view of the coastline.
🚲 Longer option (+20 km)
If you wish to extend the stage, you may cycle past the oyster beds, the salt marshes and the Lilleau des Niges Nature Reserve, a vast protected area at the heart of Île de Ré, renowned for its marsh landscapes and birdlife.
Day 3: La Rochelle – Fouras
33 km |
+60 m
You first follow a coastal route before passing through the lively seaside resort of Châtelaillon-Plage, renowned for its Belle Époque architecture and sandy beach, attracting visitors since the 19th century. A perfect opportunity to stop and enjoy a seafood platter in one of the typical wooden huts.
The route then turns towards the Baie d’Yves Nature Reserve, a protected wetland area that provides a stopover for many migratory birds throughout the seasons.
You finish the day in Fouras, a charming seaside town facing Île d’Aix.
Day 4: Fouras – Île d’Aix – Rochefort
30 km |
+35 m
We recommend enjoying the morning with a short trip to Île d’Aix. Boats depart from Pointe de la Fumée, just a short cycle from your hotel. After a 30-minute crossing, during which you will glimpse Fort Enet and Fort Boyard, you arrive on the most secluded of the Charente islands. Accessible only by boat, this protected natural site is explored on foot, by bike or by horse-drawn carriage. Its 15 km of paths allow you to gently discover this preserved island where nature reigns supreme.
Back on the mainland, the route leads you through the marshes along the right bank of the Charente estuary. You then reach Rochefort, founded in the 17th century to house a major naval arsenal commissioned by Louis XIV. This naval past is reflected in its remarkable heritage, particularly the Corderie Royale, a 374-metre-long building where ropes were made for the ships of the Sun King.
Day 5: Rochefort – Marennes
25 km |
+110 m | ⏱︎ 3h31
Leaving Rochefort, you cross one of its iconic landmarks: the transporter bridge. Built in 1900 and unique in France, it allows you to cross the Charente via a suspended gondola that still operates today — a singular experience that feels as though you are gently floating above the water.
The route then winds between marshes and canals. Once used for salt production, these vast landscapes are now home to discreet wildlife, including little egrets and grey herons. The day ends in Marennes, birthplace of the famous Marennes-Oléron oysters, matured in basins known as claires, which give them their distinctive flavour.
🚲 Longer option (+10 km)
Optional detour to the Citadel of Brouage, a fortress designed by Vauban and once a strategic port for the salt trade.
Day 6: Marennes – Île d’Oléron – Boyardville – La Rochelle
35 km |
+20 m
From Marennes, you reach Bourcefranc before crossing the Île d’Oléron bridge, from where you can admire Fort Louvois.
Île d’Oléron, also known as the Island of Mimosas thanks to its mild climate, has preserved a wild and authentic character. Your discovery begins at Château d’Oléron, a former stronghold whose citadel was fortified by Vauban. The route then continues along channels and oyster huts on the Oyster Route, before reaching Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron and finally the seaside resort of Boyardville, with its fishing and leisure harbour.
The village is bordered to the north by the Saumonards forest and to the south by the oyster site of Fort Royer. A wide sandy beach with open views of the famous Fort Boyard completes this natural setting. Its calm waters are particularly well suited to family swimming. Return to La Rochelle by boat in the late afternoon.
Day 7: End of your stay
End of your Charente odyssey after breakfast.

🎒 WHAT TO BRING
A helmet, lock, repair kit, phone holder and waterproof rear pannier form the basic equipment. If you have hired a bike, these are included (helmet on request only).
For added comfort, we also recommend bringing the following specific accessories:
Waterproof overtrousers
Lightweight, waterproof, windproof and easy to put on, they protect against rain, spray and mud. Some models include gaiters that also cover your shoes.
Power bank
Useful for charging your phone during a lunch break: navigation consumes a lot of battery, even in flight mode.
Budget around €10–20.
Padded cycling shorts or gel saddle cover
Padded shorts improve comfort by absorbing shocks and reducing friction on longer rides. Alternatively, opt for a padded saddle cover.
Water bottle
More practical and sustainable than disposable bottles. Some keep drinks cool for several hours thanks to double-wall insulation.
Buff / neck warmer / beanie
Outside of summer, mornings can be cool — you will not regret bringing one!
