THE CANAL DU MIDI BY BIKE

The Canal du Midi is undoubtedly one of the most iconic cycle routes in France. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996, it links the Garonne to the Mediterranean, tracing a beautiful ribbon of tranquil water between Toulouse and Sète. Conceived by Pierre-Paul Riquet during the reign of Louis XIV, the Canal du Midi combines genius and poetry, engineering prowess and a love for the landscape.

The Canal was completed in 1681, after years of labour and thousands of hands at work. Its oval locks, canal bridges, and aqueducts—true works of art—line a route of rare gentleness, where the water glides between plane trees and golden hills.

Long a merchant route and the vital artery of the Midi, it saw the passage of wheat, wine, salt, and wood before becoming a place for strolling and slow travel. Today, pleasure boats have replaced traditional barges, and holidaymakers have succeeded the boatmen, while on the banks, cyclists have replaced the horses that once towed the vessels.

Along its meanders, the traveller also discovers several gems of the South: vibrant Toulouse, medieval Carcassonne, Roman Narbonne, proud Béziers, and luminous Sète—each a stage that enriches the journey with its history and character.

YOUR ITINERARY

This tour links Toulouse to Sète and primarily appeals to lovers of nature, heritage, and tranquillity.

From Toulouse, nicknamed the Pink City, the route sets off peacefully along the Canal, bordered by centuries-old plane trees. Very quickly, you leave the urban bustle for the quiet landscapes of the Lauragais.

In Castelnaudary, time seems suspended: boats glide on the water while terraces come alive around a generous cassoulet.

Continuing towards Carcassonne, the medieval city rises on the horizon, proud and majestic. The Canal winds between locks and small stone bridges before crossing Béziers and its famous Fonseranes Locks, an engineering masterpiece by Pierre-Paul Riquet.

Gradually, the light becomes brighter and the air saltier. The final kilometres follow the lagoon before Sète appears, nestled between the sea and canals. The journey ends where the Canal meets the Mediterranean, in a quintessentially southern atmosphere.

Luminous, peaceful, and steeped in history, the Canal du Midi is best discovered at the rhythm of nature and the wind.

Enjoy your trip!

Soak up the Toulousain atmosphere and savour the gastronomy of the South West in one of the many restaurants in the centre or along the quays.

Day 2: Toulouse – Castelnaudary

Distance 64 km | Elevation gain +240 m | ⏱︎ 4h

Leaving Toulouse, you follow the shaded cycle path of the Canal du Midi towards the Lauragais, amidst plane trees, locks, and typical villages. The route is flat and crosses peaceful countryside. You finish this first stage in Castelnaudary, famous for its grand basin and its cassoulet.

Day 3: Castelnaudary – Carcassonne

Distance 46 km | Elevation gain +100 m | ⏱︎ 3h 23m

From Castelnaudary, you continue along the Canal du Midi and pass through picturesque villages such as Bram, a typical circular village (the famous "circulades"). The path becomes wilder and more bucolic, punctuated by rest areas and points of interest.

The stage concludes in Carcassonne, where the famous medieval citadel provides a superb backdrop to end the day.

Day 4: Carcassonne – Homps

Distance 42 km | Elevation gain +140 m | ⏱︎ 3h 32m

Departing from Carcassonne, you follow the Canal du Midi on paths that are sometimes unpaved, between locks, canal bridges, and the vineyards of the Minervois.

Day 5: Homps – Narbonne

Distance 40 km | Elevation gain +90 m | ⏱︎ 2h 48m

On the way to Narbonne, you follow the Canal du Midi to the charming hamlet of Le Somail, one of the most iconic and idyllic sites on the Canal.

Leaving Narbonne, you cross parks and vineyards before climbing towards the Oppidum of Ensérune, an archaeological site offering a spectacular view of the sunburst-shaped Montady Pond.

This varied and panoramic route is a great alternative before rejoining the Canal du Midi, revealing the region from a different perspective.

The stage ends in Béziers at the famous nine locks of Fonseranes, the masterpiece of Pierre-Paul Riquet.

🚲 Long Variant (67 km | Elevation: +330 m | ⏱︎: 4h 17m)

From Béziers, you cycle on a recently renovated cycle path along the Canal to Agde, a port city nicknamed the "Black Pearl of the Mediterranean".

In Marseillan, you can ride out to Pointe des Onglous, the iconic spot where the Canal du Midi flows into the Étang de Thau lagoon.

PATH TYPE:

The Canal du Midi route gently descends towards the sea. The terrain is almost flat, making it a pleasant and accessible crossing for most travellers with a trekking or electric bike. Regarding the terrain, the route along the Canal du Midi offers a nice diversity of paths.

Most sections are very pleasant, but there are a few passages on narrow tracks, dirt paths, or some irregularities (roots, small ruts). To ensure a more comfortable journey, we have chosen to route the itinerary through Narbonne, which avoids particularly muddy areas in rainy weather, notably around Capestang.

The simplest way is to return by train. By regional TER train, the journey takes approximately 2 hours 10 minutes, with a change in Béziers or Narbonne. There is roughly one train every 30 minutes.

More info on train timetables

💡 If you are travelling with your own bikes, they can be taken on board without being dismantled on the TER between Sète and Toulouse. However, we recommend booking your bike tickets in advance, especially at weekends, as the number of bike spaces on each train is limited.
