CYCLING IN ARDÈCHE

Ardèche… This small corner of France truly captivates visitors with the raw beauty of its wild landscapes and timeless villages. Both magnificent and discreet, it embodies a singular spirit: that of an untamed land which has always welcomed free spirits and travellers in search of authenticity.

For a long time, despite its undeniable tourist appeal, this region remained on the sidelines, protected by its rugged terrain. By turns a refuge for persecuted Protestant communities, a haven for 1970s hippies, and later a home for neo-rural settlers seeking a simpler way of life, Ardèche has forged a truly distinctive identity. It is also the only département in France not served by the national SNCF rail network! Here, time slows down, the pace eases, and you naturally fall into step with the rhythm of nature.

Today, the former railway lines that once linked the Rhône Valley to hilltop villages have been transformed into magnificent cycle routes: the Dolce Via and the Via Fluvia. Thanks to the grandeur of the landscapes they cross, they rank among the finest itineraries for lovers of outdoor travel. In fact, the Dolce Via was voted the most beautiful greenway in Europe in 2020. Often running high above the valleys, it reveals unforgettable panoramas, while the Via Fluvia, linking the Loire to the Rhône, takes you through highland scenery combining pastures, forests and stone hamlets. Finally, it would be impossible not to mention the now-classic ViaRhôna, inviting cyclists to follow the peaceful banks of the river.

YOUR ITINERARY

This 5-day cycling tour in Ardèche offers an ideal itinerant holiday to discover Ardèche by bike, linking three iconic cycle routes and delighting, above all, lovers of nature with a capital N. The loop begins in Valence, a lively town on the banks of the Rhône, perfect for strolling through parks or historic streets. Following the river via the ViaRhôna, you soon encounter hilltop villages with a distinctly Provençal feel. Turning onto the Dolce Via, you enter the wild and vibrant Eyrieux Valley. Lined with chestnut trees, the paths wind through an authentic Ardèche, punctuated by old spinning mills, tunnels and viaducts — remnants of the railway era. Several river beaches and swimming spots also dot the route, promising refreshing breaks along the way.

Gradually, you gain altitude. Above 1,000 metres, the scenery transforms: vast pastures, crystal-clear lakes and forests with a Nordic feel. From the climatic resort of Saint-Agrève, you follow picturesque country roads through the Haute-Loire before joining the Via Fluvia and reaching Annonay, the birthplace of the hot-air balloon. The route then follows a stunning minor road through the Cance Gorges, a hidden gem nestled among the hills, before returning to the Rhône. The ViaRhôna then guides you to Tournon-sur-Rhône and Tain-l’Hermitage, renowned for their vineyards and chocolate, before a peaceful return to Valence.

This cycling holiday in Ardèche, combining greenways, quiet roads and varied landscapes, will awaken all your senses. Generous and untamed, Ardèche reveals itself beautifully at the gentle rhythm of pedalling.

Enjoy your trip!

DAY-BY-DAY PROGRAMME

Day 1: Arrival in Valence

Your cycling holiday in Ardèche begins in Valence, known as the “Gateway to the South”, marking the transition between northern landscapes and Mediterranean douceur. Crossed by the Rhône and overlooked by the hills of Ardèche, the town charms visitors with its blend of southern flair and contemporary vibrancy. The arrival of the high-speed train has revitalised Valence, yet it has retained its authentic character.

Stroll through the old town, discover Saint-Apollinaire Cathedral and its pedestrian lanes, then enjoy a relaxing break in Jouvet Park, a true green oasis. In the evening, treat yourself to a local restaurant where regional cuisine is paired with the famous Côtes-du-Rhône wines.

Day 2: Valence – Saint-Sauveur-de-Montagut

44 km | +140 m | ⏱︎ 3h22

You leave Valence gently, cycling along the ViaRhôna beside the majestic river. Your first stop is Beauchastel, a picturesque medieval village with cobbled streets.

You then head into the wild Eyrieux Valley, cycling this time on the Dolce Via, a former railway line converted into a greenway. Between orchards, cliffs and old spinning mills, the landscape tells a story of industrial and agricultural heritage. Arrival in Saint-Sauveur-de-Montagut, a charming village where a refreshing swim in the river is highly recommended.

🚲 Sporty option (50 km | Ascent: 160 m | ⏱︎ 3h44)

Just after Beauchastel, the most motivated can take a detour via La Voulte-sur-Rhône, whose castle and old town are well worth a visit.

Day 3: Saint-Sauveur-de-Montagut – Saint-Agrève

48 km | +870 m | ⏱︎ 5h21

A more demanding stage, but rich in discoveries! The Dolce Via offers splendid views over the Eyrieux Valley, seen from viaducts and natural viewpoints. Halfway, stop in Le Cheylard, a lively market town where craftsmanship and jewellery-making traditions meet — you can even visit the “Maison du Bijou”, a museum space dedicated to this expertise.

In the afternoon, the cycle route climbs gradually towards Saint-Agrève, a small high-altitude town (1,050 m) set on an open plateau. From this natural balcony, views stretch across the Monts d’Ardèche, the Cévennes and, on clear days, even the Alps.

Day 4: Saint-Agrève – Raucoules or Dunières

43 or 52 km | +480 m or +540 m | ⏱︎ 3h11 or 3h57

A change of scenery: today is all about bucolic roads and mid-mountain landscapes. You cycle through conifer forests, rolling pastures, stone hamlets and small highland lakes. In Tence, a typical town of the Haut-Vivarais, enjoy a friendly break.

The route then leads to Lavalette Lake, perfect for swimming or relaxing, before quickly reaching the Via Fluvia, another gentle cycleway winding through soothing natural surroundings. The final section, between meadows and woodland, invites you to savour the tranquillity of the high plateaux.

Day 5: Raucoules or Dunières – Annonay

43 or 52 km | +370 m or +420 m | ⏱︎ 2h57 or 3h35

The route continues smoothly along the Via Fluvia, with a gradual climb to the Col du Tracol, a natural pass between the Loire and Ardèche. The descent unfolds through landscapes alternating between dense forest and open countryside.

Arrival in Annonay marks a return to urban life. Birthplace of the Montgolfier brothers, inventors of the hot-air balloon, the town preserves many traces of its industrial past. The museum dedicated to aeronautics and the Inventors’ House are well worth a visit. Annonay is also a town for food lovers, where Ardèche charcuterie, local pastries and lively markets delight travellers.

Day 6: Annonay – Valence

59 km | +30 m | ⏱︎ 4h00

A final stage without a single climb, gradually bringing you back to the Rhône. The small road through the Cance Gorges, wild and poetic, feels as though it has come straight from a novel. You then rejoin the ViaRhôna, dotted with gourmet and cultural stops. A stop in Tournon-sur-Rhône, dominated by its castle, and in Tain-l’Hermitage, home to prestigious wines (Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage) and Valrhona chocolate, comes highly recommended — tasting is almost unavoidable!

The remainder of the route follows the river at a gentle pace, returning to Valence where your enchanting cycling loop comes to an end.

Day 7: End of the trip

After breakfast, your cycling adventure comes to an end.

  • Trekking / hybrid bikes
  • Mountain bikes
  • Gravel bikes
  • E-bikes with good battery range
  • Road bikes
  • City bikes

💡 The Dolce Via includes sections of compacted gravel, so avoid tyres that are too narrow or too smooth.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL

Our holidays prioritise discovery and relaxation over physical effort.
We therefore aim to adjust stage lengths according to the terrain, type of paths and points of interest, ensuring that each day remains balanced, enjoyable and open to the unexpected.

STAGE LENGTH:

Average distance: 49 km / day
🔝 Maximum distance: 59 km / day

RELIEF:

Average ascent: + 430 m / day
🔝 Maximum ascent: + 870 m / day

💡 The maximum ascent figure may seem daunting, but the climb is very gradual! The route follows the former railway line of the Dolce Via – literally the “gentle way” – with a steady, manageable gradient that allows you to reach higher ground without much effort.

⚡ To fully enjoy the route, even on small climbs, you may choose to ride an electric bike.

TYPE OF ROUTES:

More than 60% of the route follows greenways. The remainder is on quiet country roads with little to no traffic. Over 75% of the route is asphalted, although the Dolce Via often features sections of compacted gravel. Very narrow road-bike tyres should therefore be avoided. There are no technical difficulties to report.

🌦️ WHEN TO GO?

Weather conditions are generally favourable from May to October.

Sunshine levels are generally good thanks to Mediterranean influences and the famous Mistral wind, which helps clear the skies. This often dry and sometimes strong wind regularly blows through the Rhône Valley from north to south (which means you’ll be cycling in the right direction if it’s blowing!). Its impact is less noticeable at higher elevations.

As a large part of the itinerary is at altitude, spring arrives later than in the lowlands and the pleasant season really begins in May, lasting until around All Saints’ Day. In summer, temperatures are rarely excessive, except in the Rhône Valley where it can occasionally be very hot. Fortunately, cycling along the river does not require much effort.

💡 Note: weather conditions can vary significantly from one year to another. The information above represents average conditions only.

🍽️ MEALS

Breakfasts are included.
Lunches and dinners are at your own discretion (except for 1 dinner, which is included).

During the day, you can eat at local restaurants (with recommendations provided in our roadbook) or enjoy a picnic using supplies from local shops.

💡 In the evening, there will always be at least one restaurant within walking distance of your accommodation… unless there is already one in the hotel! If you are travelling as a group, we can arrange half-board.

🧳 LUGGAGE TRANSFER

Your luggage is transferred from one accommodation to the next by one of our partners. You only carry your daily essentials during cycling stages. A pannier is provided with the hire bike.

💡 1 piece of luggage (max. 20 kg) per traveller

If you prefer to carry your luggage yourself using panniers, a discount applies.

Lightweight, waterproof and windproof, they are easy to put on and protect against rain, road spray and mud. Some models include gaiters that also cover your shoes.

Useful for recharging your phone during the lunch break: navigation is power-hungry, even in flight mode. Recommended unless your battery is particularly long-lasting.
Budget: €10–20.

Padded cycling shorts or gel saddle cover

Padded cycling shorts improve comfort by absorbing shocks and reducing friction on longer rides. Alternatively, you can opt for a padded saddle cover.
